My parents and I moved around a lot when I was a child. The furthest we have been was to Canada. Our flight departed from the infamous Kai Tak international airport. This flight sent us away from all that we have known into the very cold unknown. The temperature went from 20 degrees humid weather in Hong Kong to the -30 degrees mid-February dry winter chill in Calgary. I had no idea that was waiting for us.
Kai Tak international airport was one of the busiest and also dangerous airports to land. It was in the centre of the city, surrounded by water and apartment buildings. This airport was technically demanding for pilots to land due to the last-minute manual right turn before the short final touchdown. If you were on the streets in the Kowloon area, you would hear the noise of the airplanes and look up to see a giant jet right above you, in the little piece of sky that you could see between the buildings. It is not a scene you could see any more. Kai Tak was decommissioned in 1998.
